SYNOPSIS

Part of Neil Simon's Eugene trilogy, Biloxi Blues centers on the experiences of a young army recruit, Eugene Morris Jerome, during World War II. At basic training in Biloxi, Mississippi, Eugene is determined to use his army experiences to help his writing career, and keeps detailed memoirs about his experiences. Eugene and his fellow soldiers-in-training suffer under a hard-nosed drill sergeant, attempt to stomach the terrible army food served up in the mess hall, and bond over an adventure to visit the local prostitute. Along the way, Eugene is forced to learn about authority, danger, sex, assimilation, bigotry, homosexuality and love. In the process, he discovers that life can be both ugly and tender. This semi-autobiographical comedy has been termed by Frank Rich, "Mr. Simon's first serious attempt to examine his conscience as an artist and a Jew."

Character Descriptions

Who's Who in BILOXI BLUES

  • Eugene Morris Jerome (M, 18-25, Lead): The role off Eugene has been cast for this production. A writer and the narrator of the show. He is the alter ego of the youthful Neil Simon.
  • Roy Selridge (M, 18-25, Major Supporting): A confident man who thinks of himself as funny. He tends to take cues from others on how to behave and who to harass.
  • Joseph Wykowski (M, 19-26, Major Supporting): Big and tough - but not too smart and somewhat bigoted.
  • Don Carney (M, 18-25, Major Supporting): A private from New Jersey who irritates his bunkmates with his singing. He is not very good at making important decisions.

  • James Hennesy (M, 16-24, Major Supporting): Big and tough - but not too smart. He is part African American, but not noticeably.
  • Rowena (F, 20-up, Minor Supporting): A world-wise, Southern prostitute. She must have a flair for comedy.
